The Petri research group studies infections in children and adults:

• In the urban slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh this includes delineating the impact of infection and inflammation on the growth and development of infants, preclinical development of vaccines against the parasitic infections cryptosporidiosis and amebiasis, and clinical trials of childhood polio and the rotavirus vaccines.

• At the University of Virginia Hospital this includes the study of the immune response in humans to SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia and Clostridioides difficile colitis, testing of mechanisms of immunity in mouse models,  and clinical trials of immunotherapies for infection.
