Apr 18 Denise Monack, PhD: “Mechanisms of Persistent Salmonella Infection and Transmission”

[Jordan Hall Conference Center Auditorium] Some strains of Salmonella, e.g., Salmonella typhi, cause systemic diseases such as typhoid fever; Dr. Monack’s research explores interactions between Salmonella and immune cells, such as macrophages. She has shown that persisting Salmonella exploit the metabolic immune state of alternatively activated macrophages in order to cause chronic infections.
