Independent research is the core aspect of the program. We attempt to develop students as true ‘investigators’ in immunology by fostering a close working relationship between the student and his or her research advisor.
Ultimately, trainees choose a thesis adviser from among the ITP mentors, subject to the mentor’s willingness to accept the student. All current ITP mentors who have appointments in PhD-granting departments are externally-funded and very experienced. In addition the physical facilities and technical support available in mentor laboratories and in the UVA core facilities allow trainees to be active participants in a variety of capacities.
