In June, Emily Mercadante (Lorenz Lab) successfully defended her thesis “The Role of SHP-1 in regulating the T cell response to suppression by regulatory T cells”. This work identified a novel role for SHP-1 as a regulator of CD4+ and CD8+ T cell susceptibility to regulatory T cell suppression in vitro and in vivo. Importantly, these findings provide potential targets for therapeutic immunomodulation in cancer and autoimmune diseases, both of which feature dysregulation between effector T cells and regulatory T cells. Dr. Mercadante recently began work as a Medical Writer for Chrysalis Medical Communications, a Nucleus Global Company.
